Women's Democratic Club of Clark County - Harriet Trudell Birthday Party - August 22, 2012 : On a day when President Obama was visiting Las Vegas, Harriet Trudell's birthday bash literally stole his thunder. A day that had been full of lighting and floods ceased and turned into a beautiful summer evening precisely at 5:30pm when the party started at the Springs Preserve Cafe.. A virtual who's who of the Nevada political scene congregated for this celebration as Harriet's life thus far. A governor, U.S. Senators, members of Congress and representatives of the state legislature, county commission, numerous judges and friends joined with the Women's Democratic Club of Clark County in honoring a lifetime of achievement by this remarkable and determined woman. If the richness of life can be determined from the quantity and quality of friends, then Harriet is one of the wealthiest women in Nevada. Certainly she has served as a role model for generations of women following in her footsteps, whose journeys have been made easier by the trail blazed by this remarkable and very determined force of nature in Nevada politics. A portion of the proceeds from the print sales of this gallery will be donated to the Women's Democratic Club of Clark County.

Women of Esther - Wenzhi Zhang Art Exhibition opening - May 17, 2012 : Like flowers appearing through cracks in sidewalks, the Arts community sometimes blossomed in the most unexpected places. On May 17th, a beautiful spring night deep in the lower east side of Manhattan, one such bloom opened. In the gallery space at P.S. 12 on Madison St., renowned Guangzhou born artist Wenzhi Zhang held an opening reception of her works as part of the Women of Esther series of exhibits. Currently holding a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and working towards her PhD at the Seoul National University of Sciences and Technology , Wenzhi displayed a multiple series of works from sculpture to lacquer. Displaying a number of themes from traditional Chinese dragon sculpture and primitive earth mother figures to figures undoubtedly pointing commentary on the Red Guard and other political statements, Wenzhi’s work is both familiar and compelling. Her painted torso sculptures are akin to mannequins seen on Fashion Avenue, but re-rendered in a beautiful way. Undoubtedly though, the highlights of the show were the intricately produced lacquer pieces, some of which contained 26 layers and took six month to create. Through the painstaking process of sanding through the layers once they were completely applied and dried, the artist was creating work much in the sense of a sculptor working with a block of stone and uncovering the art beneath. Each result is unique, and to some extent unpredictable. The pieces are fascinating and draw the viewer in from a distance and right into touching distance, and the tactile sensation of the layers is encouraged by the artist as part of experiencing the art. Curator Michael Bolla writes “in the “Women of Esther” two cultures have come together seamlessly to present a profound and timely message on the societal transformation between masculinity and femininity.” Esther was a queen of Ancient Persia and heroine of the Festival of Purim who used compassion and empathy to enlighten her king and save her people.

El Museo Del Barrio 19th Annual Gala - May 17, 2012 : El Museo del Barrio held its 19th annual Gala on Thursday, May 17th in New York City at Cipriani 42nd Street. During this festive evening, the celebrated fashion visionary Narciso Rodriguez was presented with an award for artistic achievement to honor his career and longtime patronage of the organization. A Cuban descendent and proud member of the Latin American community, Rodriguez’s work frequently draws inspiration from Latino art and culture. A three-time CFDA award winner, Rodriguez is considered one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America.” The annual fundraiser, now in its 19th year, also paid tribute to philanthropist and El Museo trustee Yaz Hernández and corporate visionary Bacardi USA. “El Museo strives to keep Latino art and culture alive and Narciso exemplifies that mission with his dedication to incorporating his heritage into every aspect of his work,” said Margarita Aguilar, Executive Director of El Museo del Barrio. “We’re thrilled to be honoring such a prominent figure in the Latino community.” Along with Rodriguez, El Museo honored Yaz Hernández with a trustee leadership award. An influential member of the museum’s Executive Committee Board and a former Chair of the Gala, Yaz has been recognized by the New York Post as one of the top Latin movers and shakers in New York. Her leadership has set a new standard of excellence for the Gala, which has recently been called “one of the most glamorous benefits on the annual social calendar” by the New York Social Diary. The museum also presented Bacardi USA with the 2012 Corporate Excellence in the Arts Award as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of the company’s founding in Santiago de Cuba.

Animal Care & Control of NYC Fifth Annual Spring Fling - May 11, 2012 : Friday May 11th brought a beautiful and temperate evening to New Yorkers arriving at Gramercy Park. Across from the south entrance to the park guests and passersby alike were greeted by three rescue dogs at The National Arts Club, where pet lovers and other humane humans joined together in common cause. The event was the fifth annual Animal Care Spring Fling, hosted by the non-profit Animal Care & Control of NYC. Guests ascended the elegant main stairway of the club and entered the main gallery which is chock full of some of the finest artwork south of MOMA. Taking cues from both the architecture and the art collection, the music which serenaded the guests was a medley of songs from the Roaring 20’s, admirably performed by songstress Tamar Korn and ably accompanied by piano man Jeremy Siskind. To further enhance the mood, scrumptious canapés were served to the several hundred guests along with generous drinks by the barmen. AC&C’s mission statement is to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of pets and people in New York City and their goals are to decrease the number of animals abandoned, decrease euthanasia, and to find good homes for all healthy and treatable homeless and abandoned pets. From Executive Director Julie Bank to the many unnamed volunteers working every aspect of the organization, these people are motivated by a passion to help these discarded family members find and bring joy to new, loving homes and avoid euthanasia or starvation in the streets. Co-chairs Kevin de l’Aigle and David Zyla (recently nominated for an Emmy) and their committee members Blaine Caravaggi, Lauren Ezersky, Allie Feldman, Nisha Jain, Carol Moniz, Nancy Notaro, Jaime Tomczyk and Michelle Young brought off an event that was already crowded by the 7 pm opening and carried on well after the official ending time. The event brought together socialites, entertainers, artists and everyday New Yorkers all bound by their love of our companion animals. Opening remarks to the gathered crowd were made by Dr. Jay Kuhlman, a member of the Board of Directors, who discussed the state of animal control and the plight of abandoned pets. He was followed by Executive Director Julie Bank who spoke of the AC&C organization and the good work they are doing, thanking the crowd and promising to continue the fight. Event co-chairs Kevin de l’Aigle and David Zyla then took a turn at the microphone with Mr. Zyla reading a note from actress Susan Lucci who was unable to attend. In addition to Ms. Bank, the other executive team members were present, including Douglas Boles, Risa Weinstock, and Richard Gentles. Throughout the evening a silent auction progressed with a goodly number of beautiful items and services. One of the most hotly contested items was an iPad 3 which wound up selling for just a hair under retail, but the successful bidders happily bought the donated items, knowing the money was being spent on a worthy cause. As the evening wound down, team members continued to remind departing guests to forsake puppy mills and adopt their next pet, a sentiment with which many of the guests agreed. Brought together by Michael Bolla and Amy Bronfman Thompson, this is the second reunion of this cadre of friends who were of graduating classes from 1958-1962. Most of those in attendance grew up in the nearby public Vladeck Houses, and some of the attendees had not seen each other in fifty years.

The ACLU of Nevada honored the Las Vegas Review-Journal team who produced the series “Deadly Force: When Las Vegas Police Shoot, and Kill” with their 2012 Civil Libertarian of the Year award. The event was held at the new hot spot Barrymore restaurant in the boutique Royal House hotel in Las Vegas. 50% of net proceeds of print sales from this gallery will be donated to the ACLU of Nevada.

Doubles Club Leather and Lace Night - November 16, 2011 : The junior social set came out in force for Leather and Lace night at Doubles Club on Wednesday, November 16. A rainy evening did not dampen either attendance or high spirits as a crowd of 187 gathered at the private club located deep in The Sherry-Netherland . A glittering cocktail hour filled with lively conversation commenced before members were presented with a sumptuous feast that has become the standard bill of fare over Doubles thirty-five year history. Chairman of the Board Wendy Carduner conducted the evening like a symphony, from greeting most every guest personally and overseeing that each detail of the evening was perfectly performed to making sure that the day’s troubles were checked with the umbrellas. Wendy was overheard saying to one guest “Please forget about your 12 hour day, come in and RELAX!” Judging by the satisfied smiles after scrumptious desserts and the action on the dance floor, that is exactly what the trendy young crowd did.

Project Paz, November 7, 2011 : Project Paz is a nonprofit organization created by a group of young professionals living in New York City originally from the Ciudad Juarez and El Paso area who want to promote peace in Ciudad Juárez, México. It's mission is to support locally based organizations and promote development in the Juarez community. All the funds they raise support projects geared towards spreading hope to future generations and current victims of the violence, one project at a time. On November 7, the organization in conjunction with Banamex and 82 Mercer held its second annual fundraiser, a cocktail party and a combination live and silent auction. Designers and artists contributed works for the auction and the evening was highlighted by an address given by Margarita Zavala, the current First Lady of Mexico. Casita Fiesta 2011, November 4, 2011 : The Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education's ongoing mission is to is to provide opportunity, education and service to the predominantly Hispanic communities of the South Bronx and East Harlem, and is celebrating its 77th year. The Casita Fiesta 2011 is the organization's most important annual fund-raising event and was held on November 4th at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, featuring a star studded guest list from around the world. This year's Gold Medal award recipients include international fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, Tiqui Atencio Demirdjian, artist Julio Larraz and Ford Foundation president Luis Ubinas.

NYU Langone Medical Center Adults in Toyland, November 3, 2011 : Presented by the Committee for the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, KiDS of NYU Foundation Associates, and Caesars Atlantic City, the eleventh annual Adults in Toyland-Under the Boardwalk attracted over 600 socially conscious New York City professionals from finance, fashion, entertainment and real estate, among other industries. This festive evening featured casino and boardwalk games, a DJ, an exclusive silent auction, and cocktails and buffet, all while raising important funds for the Hassenfeld Center at the NYU Cancer Institute and the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Career Transition For Dancers 26th Anniversary Jubilee October 31, 2011 : The Career Transition For Dancers 26th Anniversary Jubilee, entitled A Halloween Thriller was held at the New York City Center on October 31, 2011. The gala event featured several world premiere performances and raised approximately $1 million. The annual Rolex Dance award was presented to Nigel Lythgoe. Other awards were presented to Victor Elmaleh, Nancy MacMillan, Michele Riggi and the National Museum of Dance. Hosted by Chita Rivera, the show performed to a near capacity crowd and featured world premiere performances of producer/director Ann Marie DeAngelo's The Bell Witch, American Repertory Ballet's piece, Pathways and Mark Stuart Dance Theatre's Interference. The dinner at The New York Hilton which followed was a sellout. A festive mood prevailed as patrons got into the costumed spirit of the masked ball and participated in a charity auction.
